At IMS Heat Pumps, we’ve spent the past 27 years working at the forefront of heat pump installation, pioneering sustainable heating solutions across the UK. Today, we are proud to take that commitment a step further as a founding partner of Heat Pump Week – an exciting initiative brought to you by Green.TV Media, designed to raise awareness and spark meaningful conversations around the importance of heat pumps in the journey to net zero.

What is Heat Pump Week?

But what is Heat Pump Week, and why are we so passionate about being involved? Heat Pump Week is a week-long campaign designed to shine a spotlight on heat pumps as a key solution to reducing carbon emissions in homes. Running from23 – 29 September, the week aims to educate the public, dispel myths, and share the real benefits of heat pump technology.

There’s a lot of misunderstanding about heat pumps, from misconceptions about their efficiency to concerns over cost and compatibility with UK homes. Heat Pump Week addresses these concerns head-on, providing clear and factual information about this incredible technology. The event seeks to foster greater trust, engagement, and interest in adopting heat pumps on a wider scale.

Why We Got Involved

As a specialist heat pump installation company with over two decades of experience, IMS Heat Pumps is passionate about promoting the many advantages of this technology. We’ve seen firsthand how transformative heat pumps can be in terms of energy efficiency, cost savings, and environmental impact. Our involvement as a founding partner is about more than just showcasing our expertise – it’s about amplifying the conversation and getting more people to understand the long-term benefits of heat pumps.

We are joining forces with other industry leaders to raise awareness during Heat Pump Week because we believe that education is key to driving change. Heat pumps aren’t new technology; in fact the first heat pump was in 1855, and we’ve been installing them for over 27 years. But despite their proven effectiveness, there are still many myths circulating about their performance, longevity, and applicability to everyday homes. This misinformation has created confusion, and our goal is to help cut through the noise, providing clarity and confidence to interested consumers.

Heat Pumps: A Solution for Now and the Future

At IMS Heat Pumps, we firmly believe that heat pumps are the ‘no regret’ choice for reducing household carbon emissions while providing reliable, efficient heating. They use renewable energy from the air or ground to provide heat, making them a greener alternative to conventional fossil fuel systems. This technology can drastically reduce home energy consumption, contributing to the broader goal of tackling climate change.

While other industries are only just starting to recognise the potential of heat pumps, we’ve been champions of this technology for decades. Our extensive experience installing systems for homes and businesses across the UK means we understand the challenges and benefits in detail. We’ve seen the shift in public perception, but we know there’s still work to do in improving understanding and driving genuine interest in heat pump technology.

Our Heat Pump Manifesto: The Roadmap for the Future of Heating

While we’ve seen increasing interest in heat pumps, significant steps are needed to accelerate adoption across the UK. That’s why, in addition to supporting Heat Pump Week, we’re laying out our Heat Pump Manifesto—a plan to ensure heat pumps become the standard for home heating. Here are the key points:

  1. A Clear Policy Roadmap – The future of heat pumps depends on clear, decisive policy direction from the government.

Boiler-Free New Builds: One of the first steps we need to take is ensuring that all new builds are designed without gas boilers. Heat pumps should become the default heating system in new homes, paving the way for a more sustainable housing sector from the ground up. This must be supported by a clear government mandate to eliminate the installation of gas boilers in new builds, ensuring we’re moving forward with cleaner alternatives.

Stable Funding Schemes: To make heat pumps accessible to as many people as possible, funding schemes need to be guaranteed in the short to medium term. Consumers and businesses need confidence that funding or incentives will be available, helping to offset installation costs and accelerate widespread adoption. Uncertainty around the longevity of these schemes creates hesitation, so securing stable, well-supported funding options is crucial.

  1. Closing the Spark Gap

The “spark gap” refers to the difference in running costs between electric heating (such as heat pumps) and traditional gas heating. Currently, gas is 4 times cheaper to than electricity, despite the latter being cleaner and more sustainable. To accelerate the transition to heat pumps, we must focus on closing this spark gap by making the lowest carbon heating, the cheapest heating. This can be achieved through policy reforms such as lowering electricity taxes and improving the efficiency of renewable energy distribution. By making heat pumps more affordable to run, we can drive greater adoption and help homeowners see the financial, as well as, the environmental benefits.

  1. A Cross-Government and Industry Awareness Campaign

For heat pumps to become the future of home heating, the public needs to hear a clear, unified message. A cross-government and industry awareness campaign is essential for educating the public and creating demand. But we face a challenge here: Do we even have the words yet? There needs to be a strong, consistent narrative that positions heat pumps as a vital part of the solution to the climate crisis. Right now, the messaging around heat pumps is scattered, and we need a cohesive communication strategy to address common concerns, correct misinformation, and build trust.

  1. Better, Supported, Hands-On Training for the Installer Transition

The success of the heat pump revolution depends not just on public awareness, but on having enough skilled installers ready to meet the growing demand.

The transition for traditional heating engineers to heat pump installers needs to be supported with comprehensive, hands-on training. This includes practical training schemes and funding for ongoing professional development. We want to ensure that installers are confident, competent, and well-versed in the intricacies of heat pump systems. By providing better training and clear career pathways, we can help build the workforce that will power the heat pump future.

The Importance of Heat Pump Week

Heat Pump Week isn’t just about raising awareness—it’s about reshaping the way we think about home heating. With increasing attention on climate action, the role of heat pumps in the future of energy is more important than ever. This campaign provides a platform for conversations that will help pave the way for widespread adoption, both in new builds and retrofitting existing homes.

By sharing expert knowledge, industry insights, and real-life case studies, Heat Pump Week looks to engage homeowners, businesses, and policymakers alike, pushing for more support, investment, and understanding of how heat pumps can be a vital part of a sustainable future.
