Many people assume older properties aren’t suitable for heat pumps, but with the right design, that’s often not the case.

As part of a renovation project, this detached off-gas home in Ashbourne replaced its oil heating system with a Grant Aerona 15.5kW R290 air source heat pump. With no access to mains gas, the homeowner wanted a cleaner, lower carbon heating solution that would provide reliable comfort while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The Project

The property had previously been heated by oil, but the homeowner wanted to move away from what they described as the “dirty” nature of oil heating. With gas unavailable and oil boiler servicing becoming increasingly difficult to source, they began looking for an alternative that would better suit their long-term plans.

Like many homeowners with older properties, they were also concerned about how well a heat pump would perform in a 100-year-old house and whether noise and vibration would be an issue.

The Solution

Following a full room-by-room heat loss calculation and system design, we installed a complete Grant renewable heating system designed specifically for the property.

Following a full room-by-room heat loss calculation and system design, we installed a Grant Aerona 15.5kW R290 air source heat pump alongside a Grant Quick Recovery Twin Coil 250L hot water cylinder. The new system works with the property’s combination of underfloor heating and radiators and was designed to provide 100% of the home’s heating demand. The installation was completed over six days and supported by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).

Customer Feedback

“We had oil heating before and disliked the ‘dirty’ nature of it. This was a cleaner option for us to explore. Gas is not available and it is getting almost impossible to find engineers to service oil boilers.”
