Making the most of a south-facing roof with solar PV, battery storage and future-ready technology
Looking to reduce his electricity bills and become less reliant on the grid, Mr. B contacted us to explore the benefits of solar panels and battery storage.
With a detached home and a large south-facing roof, the property was well suited to generating renewable electricity. Mr B also wanted to make the most of the available roof space and ensure the system was ready to support an electric vehicle charger in the future.
Following a detailed home survey, we designed a bespoke solar PV and battery storage system to maximise generation, increase self-consumption and provide a flexible energy solution for years to come.
The Property
This detached home offered an excellent opportunity for solar PV thanks to its large south-facing roof.
Although the roof included three dormer windows, there was still sufficient space to install a substantial solar array, helping to maximise renewable electricity generation while complementing the appearance of the property.
The Challenge
The customer wanted a renewable energy system that would do more than simply generate electricity. His priorities were to reduce his household energy bills, make the best use of the available roof space and install battery storage so excess electricity generated during the day could be used later, rather than being exported to the grid. He also wanted the installation to be ready for future electric vehicle charging, allowing the system to grow alongside his household’s energy needs.
The Solution
We designed a bespoke solar PV and battery storage system tailored to the property and the homeowner’s requirements. Despite three rooflights interrupting the available roof space, our designers created a layout that accommodated 18 solar panels while maintaining a clean, symmetrical appearance and maximising energy generation.
The installation includes 18 JA Solar 445W panels, providing a total system capacity of 8.01kWp, paired with a Sigenergy 6kW hybrid inverter and 9.04kWh battery.
The battery will store surplus electricity generated during the day, allowing more of the home’s renewable energy to be used during the evening when demand is often highest.
The system has also been designed with the future in mind, making it straightforward to add compatible electric vehicle charging technology as the customer’s needs evolve.
Expected Performance
Based on the system design, the installation is expected to:
- Generate around 6,800kWh of renewable electricity each year.
- Enable the homeowner to generate much of their own electricity on site.
- Achieve around 80% energy self-sufficiency through the combination of solar panels and battery storage.
- Reduce carbon emissions by approximately 2 tonnes each year.
- Provide greater protection against rising electricity prices by reducing reliance on grid electricity.
Performance figures are based on the system design and projected generation modelling.
