Helping a homeowner generate more of their own electricity with solar panels and Tesla Powerwall 3
Looking to reduce household electricity bills and make greater use of renewable energy, Mr D contacted IMS Heat Pumps to explore the benefits of solar panels and battery storage.
Following a detailed home survey, we designed a bespoke solar energy system tailored to the property. By combining high-efficiency JA Solar panels with a Tesla Powerwall 3 battery, the system has been designed to maximise self-consumption, helping the homeowner use more of the electricity generated on site and reduce reliance on the grid.
The proposed installation is expected to generate around 4,891kWh of renewable electricity each year, while battery storage increases estimated energy self-sufficiency to around 80%.
The Property
This customer’s home benefits from a south-facing roof, providing excellent conditions for generating renewable electricity throughout the year.
Following a detailed survey, IMS designed a system that makes efficient use of the available roof space while complementing the property’s existing layout.
The Challenge
Mr D wanted to generate more of his own electricity and reduce reliance on rising energy prices.
As well as installing solar panels, battery storage formed an important part of the design, allowing surplus electricity generated during the day to be stored and used later when household demand is higher.
The Solution
We designed a bespoke solar panel and battery storage system to meet the homeowner’s energy goals. The installation comprises 12 JA Solar 450W all-black solar panels, providing a total system capacity of 5.4kWp, paired with a Tesla Powerwall 3 with 13.5kWh of battery storage.
The Tesla Powerwall 3 combines battery storage and an integrated inverter in a single unit, creating a streamlined installation while allowing excess solar electricity to be stored for use during the evening and overnight.
All electrical works, isolators and cabling have been designed and specified to meet current Building Regulations and MCS requirements.
Installation
Every solar installation begins with a detailed survey to ensure the system is designed around the property and the homeowner’s requirements.
For this project, the 12-panel array has been designed for installation on the south-facing roof, with the Tesla Powerwall 3 battery and gateway located in the property’s designated plant area to provide a neat and practical installation.
Expected Performance
Based on the system design, the installation is expected to:
- Generate approximately 4,891kWh of renewable electricity each year.
- Achieve around 80% energy self-sufficiency through the combination of solar panels and battery storage.
- Deliver estimated first-year electricity bill savings of around £1,017.*
- Reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1 tonne of COâ‚‚ each year.
*Estimated savings are based on the proposed system design, assumed electricity usage and tariff information at the time of quotation.
