Converted by the present owner between 1995 and 2001, a portion of the barn is rented throughout the year as a spacious 2 bedroomed holiday accommodation. Underfloor heating pipework was installed at the time of conversion together with a large oil boiler which the owner was keen to replace with a cleaner, more efficient renewable heat source.

A ground source heat pump is now connected to the existing underfloor heating pipework, replacing the old oil boiler which was “dirty , smelly, noisy and expensive to run, it is great now to be without it“ explained the owner of the property. The barn has a limited amount of usable ground area around it, and so it was not sufficient in this instance for the required length of horizontal ground loops. So a vertical closed loop bore hole system was specified and installed by our team.

Several holes, bored into the limestone below the drive, carry heat collector pipes which connect to a high output Danfoss DHP-R ECO heat pump providing all the heating and domestic hot water requirements for both the holiday accommodation and the owners residential section of the building.

The installation qualifies for Commercial RHI (Renewable Heating Incentive) payments which will offset the installation cost of this type of heating system.
